With its twin city, Central City, Black Hawk is located in Clear Creek Canyon, just 40 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Black Hawk and Central City, Colorado have single-handedly created a new interest in the history of the region, bringing tourists in from all over the world to enjoy limited-stakes gambling available in its many casinos. At an elevation of 8042, the Colorado Rockies town of Black Hawk boasts a tiny population of 118.
History of Black Hawk, Colorado
With the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859, Black Hawk, Colorado became a popular outpost for prospectors looking for luck. The town prospered with its gaming halls, saloons, and brothels as well as an abundance of culture that complimented the gold! As a town that respects its mining history, Lou Bunch Day, in honor of Black Hawk’s most famous madam from days gone by, is celebrated every year. Black Hawk is also home of the Central City Opera House, which still holds performances to this day, hosting its well-known Summer Opera Festival.
Black Hawk has retained much of its historic ambiance by maintaining its historic storefronts. Stroll down the main street and you will feel the vibration of Black Hawk’s interesting past.
