The city, incorporated in 1891 as the town of Fletcher, was renamed in 1907 as Aurora. The development and growth of the city was tied closely with the Federal government. Fitzsimons Army Medical Center was opened in 1919, Lowry Air Force Base in 1938, and Buckley Air National Guard Base in 1941. Since 1960 Aurora has experienced phenomenal growth.
