Colorado City was founded in 1859 as El Dorado City by gold hunters from Kansas. After the venture failed, the city was renamed Colorado City. The “Old Town” became the Territorial Capital for a brief period, however, the Territorial governor never moved his office to Colorado City. The town experienced a long period of decline due to discouraging reports from prospectors and the diversion of travel from the Arkansas Valley during the Civil War. Colorado Springs was founded and developed by railroad promoter General William J. Palmer in 1871 as a planned community to attract and hold people of means and social standing, a citizenry of “good moral character and strict temperance habits”. Manufacturing establishments as well as saloons and gambling houses were to be confined to Colorado City. The area was publicized by the railroad as a “scenic wonderland” and health resort and within a short time Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, Cheyenne Mountain, and the springs at Manitou became well known. Gold also contributed to the prosperity of Colorado Springs with the discovery of gold at Cripple Creek. Between 1900 and 1910 Colorado Springs had claims to being the wealthiest city per capita in the United States.
