Fort Collins, founded in 1864 at its current site, was originally established as Camp Collins in 1862 for protection of travelers and settlers along the Colorado Branch of the Overland Trail. The camp was destroyed in a Spring flood in 1864. The camp, named after Lt. Col. William O. Collins, was moved to higher ground 5 miles downstream and renamed Fort Collins. The town struggled for the next few years, but like many Colorado towns it began to prosper after the arrival of the railroad in 1877. Fort Collins’ existence was insured 9 years earlier when Joseph Mason, the most prosperous resident of the area, persuaded the legislature to transfer the county seat from LaPorte to Fort Collins. Colorado A & M was established in 1870 as the state’s land grant college, later changing its name to Colorado State University.
